This is absolutely ridiculous. In my opinion this is boxing propaganda designed to slow the growth of the sport that has gone from nipping on their heels to crippling them with a heel hook.

On average worldwide 20 people DIE directly from boxing. the standing 8 counts and other rules in boxing make it much more dangerous for the athletes than MMA. this is why MMA has had a number of fatalities that can be counted on one hand since it's inception in the 90's. This is a claim that no other Sport can make, even high school baseball has had more deaths. If they do the math based on actual results rather than backwards theories made by people with no understanding of the sport they'd see that MMA is actually one of the safer sports out there for professional athletes.

It's nonsense, and not going to get beyond this. They tried to do the same thing years ago with boxing.

The end result would not help matters, it would just drive things underground. That means poorly trained fighters getting to fight, no medicals, no doctors, no ambulance on standby.

If they really wanted to improve MMA safety they should be looking at improving it at the amateur level, which right now is a mess in Canada. The rules are almost the same as pro in some places, and some provinces don't even allow amateur events. That is where attention needs to be placed right now.

Oh well, whenever something like this makes the news I get free media coverage talking about why it is a safe sport and needs proper sanctioning, not a ban.

There are many controversial views on MMA (a growing segment) facing our industry. We would love to hear more from you and others about it. Please post your thoughts.

The proposed ban on MMA in Canada is ridiculous for a couple very good reasons. First, boxing is the direct cause of magnitudes more head trauma in sport than MMA ever will be, yet it is not under threat of being banned and has in fact been around as a sanctioned sporting event for a century. Also, look at the difference between amatuer and professional boxing in terms of rules and safety equipment. Second, how do lawmakers define MMA when our own industry cannot agree on a definition? I have been working hard to organize the sport at a recreational level, not amatuer, semi-pro or professional but recreational with appropriate safety equipment and rules of competition that allow weekend competitors to go to school or work Monday morning in good health; no one is listening

It is extremely ridiculous that they wish to ban MMA in Canada. They have been trying to ban boxing in Canada for the last 12 years.
