10 Things To Do for The Karate Kid Movie Release - Allie Alberigo

Everyone in the Martial Arts is excited about the Karate Kid movie being released. And you should be too. The Karate Kid is a great opportunity, and if you are not doing any promotions to tie in with the movie, you will be missing out on a great opportunity. However, I want to caution you to not rely on one movie to re-energize your business and to drive new students to your school. While there are millions of dollars in promotion being pumped into the release, to the masses it is just a movie. Some people will not even connect what we do to the content of the film.

10 Things To Do For The Karate Kid Movie Release - Allie Alberigo

The Karate Kid is certainly demanding attention. It has been on the cover of three of our major industry magazines and has been a part of many schools’ advertising campaigns as well as countless tele-seminars. Shouldn’t we be doing promoting and branding all the time? I think the answer is a resounding yes, so please continue your motivation and enthusiasm beyond the movie!

Who is the “Karate Kid” in your town? What school is known for teaching and developing champions in life? Why should people in your town or city think of your school’s name first when they think of Martial Arts? In my “top 10” list of things to do, I will tell you what I believe to be important to do all the time, and I’ll tell you how you can utilize the Karate Kid, as just one example, to get you there.

  1. Don’t sit around and do nothing. This means you should use every day of the week to search for the next big opportunity. So much goes on in our towns that we are unaware of. Read your local papers and check the “community events” sections for what’s going on. Then call the promoters and offer your services. Everyone loves free donations, free demos, etc. Be a part of it all.

  2. Don’t look at the Karate Kid as the big opportunity, but rather as an additional cog in the wheel. Remember, cool movies happen all the time. What about the last Ninja Assassin? How about the last big UFC fight (which by the way happen every day)? What about next month’s movie, The Last Airbender. How about the Bourne movies? Heck, who cares if the movie is Martial-Arts-related - why not get a booth at the local movies when any popular movie is playing and sit there and sell. You’re bound to get leads. Many people at one point or another have wanted to do Martial Arts or know others who do. You just need to be in the right place at the right time.

  3. How about renting the old Karate Kid movies and do a Karate Kid movie night at your school. Make sure to make it a “bring a buddy” night. Everything we do should be about generating leads.

  4. Develop a relationship with the local businesses in your town and ask them to help promote your school.

  5. Put together a Karate Kid coloring contest and advertise it in your local newspaper. Newspapers are always looking for fun activities to write about. Take the Karate Kid poster and form it into an outline and have kids color it. Then ask them to send the colored posters to your school to win a free month, or for the grand prize winner, $100 in cash. Of course all non-winners get a free membership of some type, too.

  6. Ask your parents to film their kids doing a scene from the movie with their friends, and host a “The Next Karate Kid” star search at your school. The winner receives a free trial membership.

  7. Rent the Karate Kid movie at your local theatre for a private showing. Then give away all the tickets to non-training members of your school. Put on a demo and then give away a free pass or do a mass enrollment at the end of the movie when viewers are at the peak of their excitement.

  8. At the very minimum ask the theatres in your town if you can lend your services for free. Give raffle tickets to all Karate Kid movie goers (or movie goers at any other popular movie) and award the winning raffle holder a free membership.

  9. Put your postcards or flyers on every car at every theatre showing the Karate Kid movie or any other popular movie.

  10. Take your entire school to the release of the movie and build a community of people having fun at the event. Build the excitement and energy.

As I have said, every one of these ideas will work with any movie. If you really think about it, you can do this type of tie-in with any kind of event or premiere. Remember, the goal is and always will be to market anywhere and everywhere. The important question is what are you doing today to market your business? What about tomorrow?
