Inexpensive Ways to Market Your Business - Gary Meyer

QUESTION:
I just started a group fitness class back in November. I am looking for ideas, for inexpensive ways to market my business and get people in the door. I have two class locations, one with morning hours and the other with evening hours.

Inexpensive Ways to Market Your Business - Gary Meyer

Answer:
Other than the "basics" of flyers, posters, door hangers, and car windshield notices, I have found the best way to drum up new fitness business has been running internal "challenges" — either a 6- or 8-week fitness challenge. We charge a small enrollment fee to make it easy and quick for everyone to enroll, and then work on upgrading them into the regular program within the first two weeks. We market these challenges to the parents and existing fitness members, as well as “special” new markets.

Types of Challenges:

  • Teachers’ Challenge: Local schools each get a group of five teachers from their schools, and they compete against the other schools in the community for a prize package.
  • Couples Challenge: Any type of couple (friends, spouses, siblings, etc.) team up and compete against other couples for a weekend getaway package. (This is a great way to reach the husbands of currently-enrolled women.)
  • Team Challenge: We go to local businesses and get each of them to put together a team of five and have the teams compete against each other for a prize package.
  • Individual Challenge: Every man or women competes individually.

Your goal here is to get people in your door first, then UPGRADE / ENROLL. So a small enrollment fee is all we charge for any of our challenges.

I like all of these ideas, in fact, I think they are great. When thinking of marketing you can also think a bit more esoteric or out of the box. Think about promoting within, one of the most overlooked opportunities is the referral program. Many people have them, but not officially or they do not have something that they can consider a culture within the school. I have been in business for 19 years and I have generated thousands of students with my referral program. If you want email me at Kyoshi@lininja.com and I will send you more information on the program.
